Division of Public Health Nursing
Keeping our community healthy, preventing illness, and connecting residents with the services they need.
About the Nursing Division
Public health nursing is about more than caring for individuals: it's about protecting the health of the entire community. The Northampton Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health Nursing works to prevent illness, respond to emerging health concerns, promote healthy environments, and connect residents with the information and services they need to stay healthy.
Our nurses work wherever health happens: in schools and camps, neighborhoods, homes, businesses, and throughout the community. They help prevent the spread of disease, support healthy children and families, respond to environmental and seasonal health concerns, prepare for public health emergencies, and provide trusted health education that helps residents make informed decisions. Whether responding to communicable diseases, coordinating immunization clinics, educating the public about mosquitoes, ticks, air quality, and extreme heat, or working alongside community partners during emergencies, Public Health Nursing helps keep Northampton healthy, safe, and resilient every day.
Our Work
Northampton Public Health Nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing and public health sciences.
Northampton Public Health Nurses are directly engaged in the core public health functions of:
assessment
assurance
health promotion
policy development
We focus on promoting and maintaining health, preventing illness, injury or disability of populations.
We design evidence based health interventions and programs based on assessment, including listening to our communities needs.
We are committed to promoting and advocating for policies, programs, and practices that advance health equity and contribute to the elimination of health disparities, so that all our residents have the potential to create healthier lives.
When requested, we provide PHN services for our regional partners in the Hampshire Public Health Shared Services Coalition, and City of Northampton residents. We collaborate with PHN who are employed in partnering communities and find together we are stronger. We engage and include residents, community and health care providers, academics, business owners, faith leaders, local government officials in public health improvement efforts, including assessing public health needs and resources, setting priorities, planning interventions, and evaluating effectiveness and progress.
